Quit Smoking! …unless you like pain

Smokers suffering from spinal disorders and related back pain reported greater discomfort than those who stopped smoking during an 8 month treatment period.

Patients who had never smoked and prior smokers reported significantly less back pain than current smokers and those who had quit smoking during their care. Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, December 2012

One of the reasons this is true is due to decreased amount of oxygen available to the “lower priority” soft tissue of the skeleton (relative to organs and vessels). So while under a combination of regular stress on the spine and a deficit of life-giving oxygen, you end up with weakened discs and ligaments of the spine at an early age.  All good Chiropractors know that this can not only leave a person more prone to injury, but also slow down the recovery of even a simple back pain syndrome.
