What Is The “Root Cause” Of The Problem?

The idea of getting to the “root cause” is a common approach in holistic or functional medicine, but is there really such a thing as a “root cause?” It really depends on who you ask.

Most traditional medical doctors don’t even understand the concept of a root cause and most functional medicine practitioners spend their time addressing one or two, but sometimes still don’t help their clients get better.

If you ask Reed Davis, founder of Functional Diagnostic Nutrition (FDN), he’ll tell you that there is NO SUCH THING AS THE ROOT CAUSE. All perceived “root causes” are contributors to the dysfunction in the body, which is why when these areas are addressed people will start to feel better. But eventually over time some of the symptoms come back, or health issues are never fully resolved.

Consider the age-old question, “what came first, the chicken or the egg?”

The body is a complex system, and all systems rely on each other to function appropriately. If thyroid function is sub-optimal it can throw the whole endocrine system out of balance, and low hormones can contribute to leaky gut.

Inversely leaky gut, lack of adequate nutrient absorption and nutrient deficiencies will starve hormone production, which continues to contribute to leaky gut. It’s a vicious cycle.

We may never be able to pinpoint what came first; thyroid imbalance, adrenal dysfunction, leaky gut, etc. But by focusing on the general principles of health we can coach up function in the body and support all of the systems so they work in sync together.

This is exactly why Reed founded FDN on the principle: “we don’t treat anything specifically, we treat everything non-specifically” to truly re-build a person’s health.

A Note From WNC:

Very often the actual “cause” to our diseased and dysfunctional state that brings us to the point of symptoms is living a lifestyle that works against us! The mediocre food we eat, the time we spend sitting, staying up too late, negative attitudes, etc., THESE are the root causes to ill-health. So unless we make increasingly better choices, the homeopathics and the supplements can only help so much.
